This is the latest (unfinished) stage in an exercise in composition. I started out by randomly drawing lines on the surface to create many irregular shapes. Then I filled them in with a light or a dark, keeping my eye on the balance between the two. This is the scene I visualized to match this arrangement of darks and lights.
