Part 2: The Dolly Sequences

Two subjects were used to complete this section. First one is Winnie the Pooh on the window frame. Second one is, a yellow beetle on a street in Squirrel Hill. Both sequences were taken with the aim of having a background with a larger depth of view. In both cases the keeping the lightening condition the same was difficult, such that there are slight variations in the frames. Another difficulty lay in keeping the camera still. A chair with wheels was used to minimize the camera movement while moving on a straight line. Another difficulty was to keep the subject size the same for each frame taken. The camera screen was marked with a highlighter to have an estimate as where the subject should appear on the screen.

A.       Animated GIF

Still frames were converted into animated GIFs using Adobe Photoshop CS3.

B.       Changing the Subject and Background Distance

A mirror was used to try to create a different effect than what is achieved with still frames. Here, the only still part is the mirror frame. The reflection and background change at the same time creating a different effect. Using the same technique, the frames were put into an animated gif format.

C.       Field of View Calculations

These calculations were made using the following two images:

Min Zoom                                               Max Zoom

The width of the window: 24 inches

Distance of camera at max zoom: 85 inches

Distance of camera at min zoom: 30 inches

FOV = tan-1 ( d/2f )

FOVmax = tan-1 ( 24/170 ) = 8.04

FOVmin = tan-1 ( 24/60 ) = 21.80
