Data Mining
"Data mining" is the general process of finding patterns in or fitting
models to data. The distinction between data mining and machine
learning is a tenuous one at best; "data mining" is the term that
tends to be used more by the database community. Because the term is
used by a different set of researchers, however, there are a few
differences in emphasis. In particular, data mining often focuses on
handling datasets that would be too large for conventional machine
learning implementations to handle.
Data mining is considered a subprocess of "Knowledge Discovery in
Databases" ("KDD"), which includes data warehousing, preprocessing,
interpreting and storing the result of data mining, and so forth.
