ABSTRACT
I will discuss developments in high-speed networking technologies over the next few years, including LAN, WAN, access and backbone. We will speculate on the effect of these developments on the worldwide telecommunication market and infrastructure.

SPEAKER BIO
Andy Bechtolsheim is Vice-President of Engineering of the Gigabit Switching Group at Cisco Systems. Previously, Andy was a Founder and Vice-President of Technology of Sun Microsystems, where he was the chief architect of Sun's workstation product.

Andy left Sun in 1995 and founded Granite Systems to develop high-performance multi-layer network switches based on the emerging Gigabit Ethernet standard. Granite was acquired by Cisco in September of 1996.

Andy received a M.S. in Computer Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University in 1976 and he was a Ph.D. student in Computer Science and Electrical Engineering at Stanford University from 1977 to 1982. Andy has been honored with a Fulbright scholarship, a Deutsche Studienstiftung scholarship, and the Stanford Enterprenuer Company of the year award.
