Edward C. Stocking
CAREER SUMMARY
My career has been focused on the development and enhancement of on-going systems. I have helped users analyze their needs and then developed or enhanced systems to meet those needs. I have assisted clients with business reengineering to take advantage of the new processes available through automation and improved technology. My emphasis has always been on understanding the business of the users and making sure that the software systems enhance their ability to compete in their market.
WORK EXPERIENCE
CARNEGIE MELLON UNIVERSITY Master of Software Engineering Program (1996-1997) Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
- Participated in the complete development cycle of an application to store, modify and locate paint formulas for PPG Inc. Refinish Automotive Division. Led the efforts to understand the requirements of operating units in both North America and Europe. The program uses an Oracle back end and a web-based ActiveX front-end. Primary development in Visual Basic 5.
- As part of a team, designed and implemented a distributed system in C++ to securely transfer order information using public-key encryption. Implemented primary-backup replication and web-based interface.
PACKARD BUSINESS SYSTEMS, INC. (1988-1996) Ann Arbor, Michigan
- Served as corporate treasurer 1993-1997. Responsible for overseeing accounting operations, producing financial statements and preparing tax and government reporting documents for multiple jurisdictions.
- Wrote mission-critical, LAN-based applications for two factoring organizations. Fully responsible for management, design and coding. Programs track collateral and loans, calculating fees and interest. Implemented security and record locking protocols. One of these programs has allowed client to increase their business volume by a factor of at least four over an eighteen month period.
- Designed and wrote a core-business, LAN-based appointment management and tracking system for an insurance service bureau. Fully responsible for management and design with oversight of all coding. Program tracks all phases of business from initial request for appointment through provider payment and issuing 1099 forms. This system has eliminated 75% of the paper required for operations and made the information available as a central resource, increasing the efficiency of the staff.
- Fully responsible for on-going maintenance of a multi-user accounting and inventory system in COBOL under UNIX for a successful manufacturing company.
- Participated in a study to develop requirements for an organization-wide LAN for a government institution. LAN included remote communication facilities, shared fax services, and a gateway to an IBM mini-computer. Assisted in writing the Request for Proposal and evaluating vendor bids.
- Designed and wrote a communications application to network intelligent manufacturing equipment. This allowed the reuse and sharing of numerical control programs and reduced the preparation time required per job.
- Designed and implemented surfacing and other graphics algorithms in Fortran for a Computer-Aided Design company.
UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN (1982-1988) Ann Arbor, Michigan
- Instructor (part-time) and graduate student in Mathematics.
GREENVILLE COLLEGE (1980-1982) Greenville, Illinois
- Part-time employee in the data processing department while an undergraduate. Participated in the development of student records and registration systems.
