PHILADELPHIA (UPI) -- Matt Clizbe returned a punt 66 yards for a touchdown Saturday and Ricky Spears ran back an interception 35 yards for another score in a 28-point first quarter to lead No. 21 California to a 58-0 trampling of Temple. The Golden Bears, 3-0, erupted for four touchdowns in a 4:38 span midway through the first quarter. They led 45-0 at halftime and played substitutes throughout the second half. The shutout loss was the worst for the Owls, 1-1, since 1977, when they were beaten 76-0 by Pittsburgh. Lindsey Chapman scampered 20 yards for the game's first score with 7:55 left in the first period. The Bears stopped Temple and Clizbe ran back his punt return for a 14-0 lead. Reynard Rutherford's one-yard TD run capped California's next possession and Spears picked off Phil Lang and returned it for a 28-0 lead with 3:17 left in the quarter. Damien Semien hauled in a 66-yard scoring toss from Bears quarterback Dave Barr and Rutherford added a six-yard scoring run with 4:20 left in the half for a 45-0 lead. Barr completed 6 of 10 passes for 162 yards and one touchdown. The California defense harassed Lang into a 2 of 16 performance. Backup running back Tyrone Edwards scored two second-half touchdowns for the Bears.
