Beyond HTML: Search Tools (e.g., WAIS)

If you publish lots of information on the Web, you should provide an index

Information is most valuable when it can be searched. Don't just rely on someone else's Lycos to do it for you, create a local index of all your documents. There are several choices:
  • WAIS - Provides fast access to index data, even huge amounts of data, but doubles your disk usage. Contact WAIS, Inc. for more info.
  • Glimpse - Accesses take longer than WAIS, but only 5% additional disk storage is required. Limit of 64K total files per index.
  • Lycos - Run a local copy of this popular Web search tool, very useful for distributed databases. Beta source is available (requires perl).
