Catholic Masses in the CMU area
Some possibly useful information for Catholics in the CMU community:
Campus Masses
Masses at Carnegie Mellon, the University of Pittsburgh, and Chatham
College are celebrated by the Oratory.
Here is the
schedule of Masses and Confessions from their Web site.
Duquesne University also has campus Masses. Here's the schedule
I was told a while back:
- Saturday, 6:30 pm in the university chapel.
- Sunday, 11 am in the university chapel.
- Sunday, 9 pm in the university chapel.
Area Parishes and Oratories
-
The Ryan Catholic Newman Center
(also known as the Oratory)
is the Roman Catholic Chaplaincy
for CMU, Pitt, and Chatham. The Newman Center is at 4450 Bayard Street,
in a new building that opened in November 1994.
In addition to the sacraments, the Newman Center offers a number of
fellowship programs that provide some nice ways to meet non-CS
students, and to share and grow in the faith. (The Wednesday
evening group has free food, too.) Note that the Newman Center is
not a parish, so you may need to be registered elsewhere if
you want to be considered a member of a parish. 681-3181.
-
Saint Bede's, at Dallas and Wilkins serves the
Squirrel Hill/Point Breeze area. 661-7222.
-
Sacred Heart, at Shady and Walnut serves the Shadyside area, and
offers a ``Last Chance Mass'' at 7:45PM Sunday evenings. (During
the school year, there's also the 8PM Sunday Mass at CMU.)
661-0187.
-
Saint Paul's Cathedral is right in the heart of Oakland, across
from the SEI. 621-4951. Here's their mass schedule, as of 6 Dec 1995:
- Saturday, 6 pm.
- Sunday, 6:30 am, 8 am, 10 am, 11:30 am, 1 pm, and 6 pm.
- Weekdays, 6:45 am, 7:30 am, 8:15 am, and 12:05 pm.
St. Lawrence O'Toole is at 5323 Penn Avenue in Garfield.
The 11:00 Mass is apparently a folk liturgy (like some of the
Newman Center masses). 363-1771.
-
Mercy Hospital has regular Masses on Sunday. Joe Mertz
writes:
"The music is new and top-notch.
It is typically accompanied my synthesizer and one or two flutes. The
atmosphere is friendly, the language is inclusive, and the homilies
are relevant. All are welcome. Sunday Mass is at 11:00. There is a
Saturday night Mass, but I am not sure of the time. To get there,
just go in the main door of the hospital, go up the stairs, and the
chapel is directly to the left of the receptionist's desk."
-
Duquesne University downtown has its own campus ministry
with several Masses during the school year. 396-6020.
Alternate Liturgies
-
Tridentine Latin Masses (approved by the Diocese of Pittsburgh)
are held weekly at St. Boniface Church
(in Holy Wisdom Parish)
on the North Side.
Here is
the order of the Mass used.
Low Mass is at 8am on Sunday; High Mass is at 11am. For more
information,
see this
page or call 766-0950.
-
There are several
Eastern Rite churches in the area.
The closest to campus is Holy Spirit Byzantine Catholic Church on
Fifth Avenue between Morewood and Neville. (682-8584).
Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary is on Beechwood in Greenfield
(right over the bridge from Schenley park) (421-5231).
-
As a result of Pittsburgh's heritage of successive waves of
immigrants each settling in a different neighborhood, there
are a number of parishes geared toward specific ethnic groups
(but mostly European). Some of them disappeared after the
recent diocesan reorganization, but a few remain.
Sister
Bernadette at the Newman Center is probably a good person
to ask about these sorts of things.
-
Misa en Espaniol: Domingos a la 1:00PM, en la capilla detras
de Central District Catholic High School, Fifth Avenue, entre Neville y
Morewood.
