Evolution of Network Infrastructures

Tuesday, 28 October 1997

4:30 pm, Wean Hall 7500

ABSTRACT
Networks have evolved from simple shared networks, through networks interconnected with bridges and routers, to networks with a mix of switching, bridging and routing. But these solutions all have limitations because they couple the logical infrastructure of the network directly to the physical infrastructure. In this talk, I'll describe this evolution and these limitations and show how ATM networks offer an alternative: a logical infrastructure separate from the physical.
