We developed stiffness reconfigurable shoes in the fast prototyping workshop of New Balance.

Shoes require different configurations of stiffness depending on the use cases. We need a walking shoe as soft as possible, a hiking shoe with a stiff ankle protection, a biking shoe with stiff sole, etc. We developed materials that can sense different use cases, and adjust regional stiffness of a shoe automatically.

In addition, stiffness changing shoe can be used for self-tightening, such as self-tying shoe lace.
