The SCS Network: Future Plans

  • Several directions for future SCS and campus network architecture being investigated

  • Several issues being considered:
    • Application requirements
    • Installation requirements
    • Cost
    • Relationship with vendors
    • Scalability
    • Ease of deployment
    • Integration with installed base

  • Several technologies/hybrid possible:
    • Switched ethernet (10Mbit/sec) - accommodates existing network, virtual bandwidth upgrade
    • 100BASE-T (100Mbit/sec) dedicated/shared, lower cost, may run over current cabling
    • 100VG-AnyLAN (100Mbit/sec) - dedicated, priority, is/is not suited for current cabling
    • ATM (155Mbit/sec and up ) - dedicated, cabling issues for higher speeds, standards evolving
    • Fibre Channel (100Mbits/sec - 3.2Gbits/sec) - backbone technology, bus architecture for implementing SCSI, etc
