The SCS Network: Future Plans
Several directions for future SCS and campus network architecture being investigated
Several issues being considered:
Application requirements
Installation requirements
Cost
Relationship with vendors
Scalability
Ease of deployment
Integration with installed base
Several technologies/hybrid possible:
Switched ethernet (10Mbit/sec) - accommodates existing network, virtual bandwidth upgrade
100BASE-T (100Mbit/sec) dedicated/shared, lower cost, may run over current cabling
100VG-AnyLAN (100Mbit/sec) - dedicated, priority, is/is not suited for current cabling
ATM (155Mbit/sec and up ) - dedicated, cabling issues for higher speeds, standards evolving
Fibre Channel (100Mbits/sec - 3.2Gbits/sec) - backbone technology, bus architecture for implementing SCSI, etc
