Soccer formations are typically described as the X-Y-Z where X, Y, and Z are the number of defenders, midfielders, and forwards respectively. It is assumed that the eleventh player is the goaltender. [11]. Soccer formations are not to be confused with military-type formations in which agents must stay in precise relative positions.
