15-239: Software Development for Social Good (Spring 2014)
Homework 1
Due: Tuesday, 14-Jan-2014, at 8pm
First read these notes carefully:
- Note #1: this is a quick-turnaround homework. Students are expected to invest about 3 hours into it. No late submissions will be accepted.
- Note #2: for any questions involving research (on this and all future homeworks), you will be graded on the quality of your research. In particular, do not just use the first few items a Google search returns. There is little value in everyone doing that. Instead, probe deeply, and find some really interesting and compelling citations. In any case, when we collate all your collective findings, we want a rich diversity of examples and observations.
- Note #3: you may submit your answers in any standard format (txt, html, doc, pdf).
- Note #4: if possible, you will submit via Autolab. In the event that Autolab is not set up in time, we will make a Piazza post prior to the deadline indicating how to submit hw1.
Assignment:
- TechCaFE 2013 Review
- Review last semester's TechCaFE project details. (Nothing to submit here except a confirmation that you did this.)
- Existing Educational Game Frameworks
- Identify at least two existing educational game frameworks. Again, take the time to find excellent examples!
- List some features of theirs that might be good for us to include.
- List some features that they do not include that we should consider, given our specific goals.
- Cross-Cultural Educational Game Literature
- Read this paper:
- Read one (chosen randomly) of these two papers:
- Identify at least one additional paper or article on educational games or educational game frameworks, ideally focusing on cross-cultural perspectives.
- List the key takeaways from each of these sources that you think are most relevant to our efforts. Keep your list limited to 5-10 items, but of course make them the most important items for us to consider.
