FOCS 2005 is being held at the Omni William Penn Hotel (map) in downtown Pittsburgh. The nearest airport is the Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT). Tutorials on October 22 will be held at Carnegie Mellon University, which is about 5 miles from the conference hotel (further information below); here is a map showing the relative locations of the two places.

Directions from the airport to the hotel:

The Pittsburgh International Airport is about 20 miles (and approximately 30 minutes driving time) from the hotel. Airport information can be obtained at the airport website, or at 412-472-3525. All modes of transportation leave from the Ground Transporation area of the Airport, next to the baggage claim. Note: for those of you who just can't wait, the airport has free wireless by the gates and in the mall area.

By Taxi: A taxi should cost you about $35-40, and take about 30 minutes. Taxis should be available outside the baggage claim area.

By Shuttle: Airport Express provides shuttle service between the airport and hotels in downtown Pittsburgh and Oakland. Reservations are not necessary. Shuttles leave the airport every hour on the hour. Rates are $17 one way and $32 round trip. Their number is 1-800-991-9890.

By Bus: Pittsburgh has a very good system of buses. The 28X Airport Flyer bus gets you from the airport baggage claim area to downtown in 40-45 minutes, and costs $2.25. (Exact change is required). Here is a schedule. Get off at William Penn Place and walk 2 blocks (along Wm Penn in the same direction as traffic) to the hotel. The Pittsburgh Area Transit (PAT) website has tons of other schedules and maps, if you want to roam around PGH.

By car: Directions can be found on Google maps, on Mapquest, or also at the hotel website. Car rentals are next to the baggage claim area.

Getting around Pittsburgh:

Getting to CMU (Tutorials): You can get to CMU for the tutorials either by taking the public buses ($1.75) or a taxi (about $10, so not much more than the bus if you split it a few ways.) To take the bus, walk one block to Fifth Ave, and take the 61(A,B,or C) bus, getting off at Forbes and Morewood. Tutorials are in the University Center. Here are specific details and a map.

Getting to Station Square: Station Square has a number of shops, restaurants, and bars. It is about 3/4 mile away. To get there you can either:
  • Take the T (subway). There is a T stop right across the street from the hotel.
  • Or you can just walk there. It is due south: cross the Monongahela river at the Smithfield Street Bridge. Here is a map.

Alternative ways of getting into Pittsburgh:

If you do not want to fly/drive to Pittsburgh, here are a couple of other options. (Note that these may be a bit slower than you'd expect.)
By Greyhound: The usual Greyhound Trailways station is closed for renovation, and the Greyhound Temporary Station is at 909 Second Ave., Pittsburgh, PA. (directions) For schedule information, see the website, or call 1-800-231-2222.
