Midterm
Between Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2025 at 3:30pm (after class) until Fri, Feb. 28, 2025 at 11:59pm
This class will have a take-home test on the first half of the material, which you can take anytime between Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2025 at 3:30pm (after class) until Fri, Feb. 28, 2025 at 11:59pm.
- The test will be on Canvas in the "Quizzes" section.
- The test will be designed to take about 80 minutes.
- However, you can take as long or short as you want during the test period, and you do not have to do the test in one block of time.
- Please be careful not to Submit the test until you are done, since it will not let you submit it multiple times, and after submitting, you cannot go back and edit any of your answers. Canvas saves your answers after the focus leaves each question, so your answers won't be lost.
- Be sure to Submit when you are finished, and before Fri, Feb. 28, 2025 at 11:59pm.
- You will be asked to keep track of how long it takes you to do the test, so please answer honestly -- that will not affect your grade, but will help me for next time. Naturally, it is best to start and finish earlier in the time period, in case there are issues, of if you have questions for me that are blocking your progress (see below).
- It will be entirely open-book, open Internet, etc. That means you can look up anything you want during the test.
- However, you should not use an AI to help you with the answers to this midterm (that is, do not use ChatGPT, Gemini, CoPilot or any other AI tool to answer the questions) - you must do your own reading and looking up things on your own.
- The midterm is individual. You are not allowed to look at another person's exam or discuss questions with other students during the exam.
- Questions for me about the midterm: You can ask me questions about the midterm before or during the test using the Canvas Discussions: "Midterm take-home test: Questions and Discussion". I will strive to be available to answer questions between 4:00pm -11:00pm ET on Wednesday, and 10:00am - 5:00pm ET on Thursday and Friday, so it would be best to not leave the test to the last minute. It will also be useful to occasionally check to see if there are corrections to the test or answers to other people's questions that might be useful to you.
- The content of the midterm can be anything covered in the lectures, the textbook, or homeworks up to and including the February 24th lecture topic.
- This includes homeworks 1, 2 and 3, and lectures 1 through 12.
- It will not cover "Interactions in 3D, Virtual and Augmented Reality, and Games" (lecture 13) - that will be on the final test.
- Another way to look at it, is that the exam will cover chapters 1-5, 7-12, and 21 of the textbook.
- Not chapter 6
- The focus will be on the design tradeoffs and evaluations for different options for different interaction techniques, and the details of the interaction techniques designs.
- However, there will be some questions about historical systems, and what was first introduced with which systems.
- The format will include multiple-choice questions like the quizzes, but also short answer and essay questions that will be manually graded.
