TREC-8 Ad-hoc Task: The Ultimate Challenge

• Data: LA Times, Federal Register, Foreign Broadcast Information Services and Financial Times.

• Collection size »1.5GB.

• Typical query A relevant document will focus on the causes of the lack of integration in a significant way; that is, the mere mention of immigration difficulties is not relevant. Documents that discuss immigration problems unrelated to Germany are also not relevant.

• Procedure

  • Expand nouns and verbs in the queries by traversing hypernym/hyponym links in WordNet.
  • Use SMART to find the 5000 most relevant documents for each query.
  • Use TROVE to rearrange the ranking lists generated by SMART for each query.
