Carol gained her Ph.D. in the field of Cultural Studies in Computer Science from the School of Computer Science (SCS), Carnegie Mellon University. She taught Cultural Studies as a graduate instructor in the English department, Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences (formerly H&SS), for 4 years and also worked as a student academic advisor. Prior to coming to the U.S. and transferring to Carnegie Mellon, Carol was a Ph.D. student in English Lit. at the University of London. She has a background in inner-city London high school teaching and in hospital teaching. One of her great professional pleasures was teaching at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital School (RNOH) just outside London, England.

Carol is married to Alan Frieze, Professor of Mathematics at Carnegie Mellon. They have two adult children, son Adam (teaching in London, England) and daughter Nancy (physical therapist), son-in-law Joe (HS science teacher), and grandgirls Maisie, Molly, Gracie and Sophie. The family also includes Allie, a Rottweiler mix.
