The TGs

We are responsible for organising and bank-rolling the "TGs". TG is short for TGIF, which expands out to "Thank God It's Friday".

A TG is basically an excuse for department members to goof off for a couple of hours, eat, drink and be merry. Accordingly, food and beverages (usually including beer) are provided. Currently, the food is intended to be "party food" and not a meal.

TGs are held at irregular intervals, according to the state of Dec/5 finances, and also other factors (mainly, the whims of the Dec/5 organisers). A special event is the "Black Friday TG" held on the Black Friday at the end of each semester. This is a day-long TG with a few extra activities - watching the SCS Home Video is a favourite.

Another special event is the "Wedding Ceremony", at which the first-year PhD students are joined to their advisors "until graduation do us part" (or not, as the case may be). This usually takes the form of a souped-up TG, but with wedding accessories such as champagne and cake.

We also handle the Spring Picnic.

Below is a list of recent and upcoming TGs.
