Bad Science...

New Times Los Angeles
February 1, 2001

And guess who's promoting it? The following quote came from a pro-Scientology letter that you printed in response to the Raul Lopez story "Separating a Man From His Money," Letters, January 11-17: "As a man who originated the most successful drug rehabilitation program in the world, Narconon, and the most used literacy system, Applied Scholastics, L. Ron Hubbard ought to merit some favorable mention in your pages."

In typical Scientology fashion the writer does not address the issues raised in your article regarding the alleged fleecing of Lopez but instead raises the issue of the great things Ron Hubbard has done.

The Narconon program is another Scientology front group that uses Scientology teachings to "help" addicts. The problem is that the Purification Rundown (the basis of Narconon) is dangerous. It involves the intake of very large doses of niacin (many hundred times greater than the recommended dose) and spending many hours in a sauna and running to sweat out the toxins. This is bad science as one does not sweat out most street drugs (or other drugs); these toxins are dealt with by the liver or kidneys. It is also a fact that large doses of niacin block the release of fat from a person's body.

Hubbard claimed that this Purification Rundown would clear a body of radiation. This is also false. There is a lot of information available on this very dubious practice on the Internet. Check all the sites both pro and con and learn for yourselves what this actually is.
