Pittsburgh Restaurants

This is an attempt to list restaurants in Pittsburgh accompanied by my personal review of the ones I have visited. The restaurants are grouped based on the kinds of food they serve.

Cafes

  • Arabica: Four locations: S. Craig near Forbes Ave., Bellefonte by Walnut St. in Shadyshide, Forbes Ave in Squirrel Hill, and E. Carson on the South Side. Recently acquired by Tuscany. If you are looking for Seattle-style mocha, don't bother. They've changed their menu.
  • The Beehive: Two locations: E. Carson on the South Side, and Forbes Ave in Oakland (with a large screen theater with two or three comfortable 2/3 person couches). Expect to see 'weird' people around you...
  • Starbucks Coffee. The primary Seattle coffee company. In addition to mail-ordering your coffee beans, you can now find it in the Sq. Hill Barnes & Noble. They are also opening a new coffeehouse in the corner of Shady and Forbes in Sq. Hill.
  • Tuscany: The 'other' Seattle coffeeshop. Location: Forbes Ave in Oakland. Great mocha!!
  • Coffee Roaster: Forbes Ave. in Squirrel Hill.
  • Java Jeff: Murray Ave. in Squirrel Hill.
  • 69c Coffee: Murray Ave. in Squirrel Hill.

  • Asian Food: Chinese, Indonesian, Thai, Indian, etc

  • Bachrie's: Indonesian and Greek food.
  • Orient Kitchen: Chinese food. Location: Semple Street in Oakland. Great food - my favorite Chinese restaurants in town. Try the 'baked salted squid' or the 'steamed bass'. Closed on Wed. Dishes vary from $5 to around $10.
  • Yum Wok. Chinese fast food. Good value lunch. They have decent 'Tomato Chicken' and 'Chinese Noodle with Seafood'. Prices from $3.50 to $7 for dinner.
  • China Palace.
  • Tai Pei.
  • Hong Kong. Location: Forbes Ave in Oakland, near the Attic. Has recently changed into a buffet, all-you-can-eat place. Around $5 for lunch and $7 for dinner. Good food. My favorite: Singapore Rice Noodle.
  • Taste of India. Location: Penn Ave. My favorite Indian restaurant in town. Dishes vary from around $6 to around $10.
  • Sree. Heard to serve very good, inexpensive food. Haven't sampled it yet.
  • Darbar Location: Center Ave, near Craig.
  • Star of India. Location: S. Craig, near Forbes Ave. Good buffet $7 lunch on certain days. Relatively expensive and not as good as other Indian restaurants.

  • American

  • The Grand Concourse: located in the beautiful landmark building that used to be the train station in Station Square. Their Sunday Brunch must be experienced if you claim to have lived in Pittsburgh. Great fish dip, good salmon, and overall excellent food. If you arrive before 6, you can get their early bird price (approx. $10 per dish). The 'Green Room' has a very nice view of downtown and the rivers.
  • Cliffside: Mount Washington.
  • Georgetown Inn: Mount Washington.
  • Christopher: Mount Washington.
  • City Grill: E. Carson on the South Side. Good deals on barbeque chicken, Norwegian salmon, and their specialty, hard-wood grilled steaks and ribs.
  • Tessaro's: Liberty Ave. near Bloomfield. Same owner as City Grill, and you get the same excellent food. Somewhat like your neighborhood bar and restaurant - the waitresses seem to know everybody in the restaurant.

  • European: Italian, French, German, etc

  • Pasta Piatta: by Walnut St. in Shadyside.
  • Juno Trattoria: inside the Oxford Centre, Grant St, downtown.
