I am working with Nii Simonds, Henry Barnor and Nana Manu to develop a robotics workshop and competition for students in Ghana and other parts of Africa. A pre-pilot version of the hands-on workshop, using Lego robot kits, was held as part of the MakerFaire Africa event in Accra in 2009, and was very well received. Stay tuned for future plans. |

I have actively participated in the outreach activities of the Women@SCS organization at Carnegie Mellon. We give talks or roadshows to middle and high school students, exposing them to what computer science is about, and encouraging them to study it. It’s always fun to talk to young people about the exciting opportunities in computer science. |

I am currently serving as a mentor for an all-girls high-school FIRST Robotics Team, co-sponsored by the Field Robotics Center at Carnegie Mellon University I served as a judge for the Middle Eastern Regional Botball competition held at Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar, in April 2010. With colleagues, I organized a robotics workshop for high school students in the Technology Leadership Institute, a summer program held at the University of Pittsburgh, in 2007. |

I attended the week-long Pittsburgh Science of Learning Center summer school in July 2009, focusing on the “Intelligent Tutors” track. I learned a lot about intelligent tutors, and learned how to use the authoring tools developed by the PSLC to create an example-tracing tutor and a cognitive tutor. My project focused on teaching English grammar. I will be attending again in July 2010, this time focusing on the “Educational Data Mining” track. |

I was awarded a TEDGlobal Fellowship to attend TEDGlobal 2007: “Africa: the next chapter”, in Arusaha, Tanzania. This was an inspiring event that brought together speakers including entrepreneurs, scientists, activists, etc, from all over Africa to highlight some of the exciting and promising developments on the continent, and to talk about the future of Africa. |
