Before I began to learn Wushu, my parents were always worried if I could grow up healthily like other children. I was such a weak child that I was always falling ill. They told me that they couldn't remember there was any week when they wouldn't accompany me to hospital. They managed to persuade Chen Baogeng, the coach of Shanghai Baoshan district sports school, to accept me as his student. They thought that was the only way to pull me out of books for some time and gave me more physical training. So in 1982, I began to learn Wushu.

In sports school, we had three-afternoon training each week, from 3:00pm to 6:00pm. At the beginning, I felt the training was too hard. It was my parents who were always encouraging me to face all the difficulties and be persistent. It was 20 kilometers from my home to the sports school. Parents let me take bus by myself to go there, but father would later come and accompany me back home. I remembered, in the afternoons when I had training, as soon as Dad finished his work, he would ride his old bicycle from his office to the school, then rode another hour to take me home. Shanghai's winter wind was biting, but sitting in the back seat of the bike helped alleviate the coldness because of Daddy's broad and warm back. This routine went on for nearly three years. Each time when I felt tired and wanted to give up the training, I would think of the deep love my parents gave me. I thought I would never let them down, so each time I would take up and continue my training.

In 1990, I got enrolled in Tsinghua University. Although the studying was very intensive, I found that Wushu had became an inalienable part of my life. I went to Prof. Liu Yunpeng, the coach of Tsinghua Wushu team, and told him my wish of practising Wushu. The coach was so kind and permitted me to exercise with his formal athletes. One month later, he further accepted me as a formal athlete. During my college life,  I got so much from our Wushu team, which was like a big family. The old teammates not only helped me improve my playing skills, but also taught me how to face the difficulties in study and life. I competed for my university in various contests and won medals every year.  The most precious thing I got from Wushu, however, is to learn to be persistent, to be optimistic and to be fraternal.

In 1994, from TV, my parents saw my performance in our National College Martial Arts Contest, in which I came in a 4th place. They called me immediately and said that they thanked Wushu so much, because it shaped out such a lively and outstanding child for them. Yes, I can't imagine what my life would be if Wushu didn't come into my life. I will always feel grateful to all those who love me, my parents, my dear husband, all my teachers and friends. It is their love which always encourages me to make strides forward.
