Computing Infrastructure
Please follow the instructions below whenever you begin working on a
programming project.
Notice that some of the instructions apply only when you re working working
on machines in a CMU cluster; others apply only when you are working from
your own computer.
For a detailed explanation of the steps for using Eclipse, see the
Windows Operating System & Eclipse IDE or
the Mac Operating System & Eclipse IDE handout.
Both documents are linked on the course web page via the Handouts
(General) page.
Logging In (CMU clusters; skip if using your own computer)
- On Windows
- Observe a Welcome to Windows box.
- Hold down the Ctrl and Alt keys and press the Del
key (often written Ctrl+Alt+Delete); a Log on to Windows
box will pop up.
- In the User Name box, enter your Andrew username.
- In the Password box, enter your Andrew password (it will appear a
*s).
- Ensure the Log on to option box says ANDREW.CMU.EDU (Kerberos
Realm); if it is showing anything else, select this option from
this option box.
- Click the button labelled OK or press the Enter/Return key.
- On Macs
- Move the mouse a bit and a Carnegie Mellon Computing Services box
will pop up.
- In the Name box, enter your Andrew username.
- In the Password box, enter your Andrew password (it will appear a
*s).
- Click the icon labelled Log In or press the Enter/Return
key.
General Tasks (before programming)
On Windows (not Macs)
- Open an Explorer Window (right click on Start button on
the task bar and then select Explore).
On Windows and Macs
- Start a browser (Internet Explorer, Netscape, etc.) and select browsing
your course home page at the url http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~pattis
(it is an excellent idea to bookmark this page, or the one specific to
your 15-200 course, on your own computer).
- Browse the Announcements page for new (or older) class
announcements.
- Read the academic.cs.15-200pattis bboard for recently
asked/answered questions.
