IR 11-741 - Term Project Requirements

This page provides an overview about the requirements for the term projects in the IR 11-741 course in Spring 1998.

Due (or Presentation) Dates

Note: Due/Presentation time is always the resp. class on that day (except for demos).

Credit Assignment

For your term project (which is worth 60% of the class credit), the relative credits are distributed as follows:

Individual Project Webpages

To monitor your progress on your project, both for yourself and for us, you are asked to set up a Web page for your term project by Tuesday, March 3rd. It should be placed in your personal directory on /afs/cs/user/userid/www and be named ir11741tp.html (this is the default location of the links below). Only if you don't have a cs-account, you can use your andrew-account, but please send email about that. Also, if the link on this page does not work, please notify us in time.

Your page should closely follow the example page in terms of design/sections. You can of course add other sections if you want to.

Notes:

You are also asked to update your page regularly, but at least once a week. Specifically, assess and re-evaluate your milestones and timelines s.t. you won't get into time problems when the projects are due. This page will also be valuable to you for the write-up of the preliminary and final reports.

Preliminary Results

The preliminary results have to be written up in form of a short report, about 2 pages long, but not more than 3 pages. This report is due in class on Tue Mar 17.

Please submit 2 copies!

Final Report

The final report is due at the beginning of the class of Thu Apr 23rd. It should consist of not more than 5 pages of text, but can contain several appendices. (Note that we will not read excessively long reports. Conciseness will be honoured for this part of your project!)

Please submit 2 copies!

Final Presentations

The final presentations are scheduled for the 3 last classes of this course (see individual assignments to dates). Each presentation will be 15 minutes in length: 10 min. talk, 5 min. discussion. You should prepare slides (recommended: 6-10) and provide hand-outs (e.g., the copies of your slides) for the audience. Active participation in the discussions is part of your grade. Also, it's a matter of fairness to your classmates not to miss their presentations.

Demos

Specifically if your project involves some sort of programming/system implementation, you are encouraged to demonstrate it to class (extra credit!). But also for projects that don't include significant amounts of system implementation, it could still be interesting to show some of your results online (or, you could create a poster, e.g., and talk about it.).

All demos/poster presentations will be on Tue, April 28, in the LTI Lab (next to the lecture room), 3.15-5.15pm. Each presentation will be 20 minutes.

The schedule for the demos is as follows (indicated is the beginning time):

J.Goldstein: 3.15pm

B.Lowekamp: 3.35pm

J.Kominek: 3.55pm

L.Chen: 4.15pm

K.Thomas: 4.35pm (poster)

P.Jang: 4.55
