ABSTRACT:
Drawing on his experiences in Industry, Government and Academe --- and his beneficial association with Raj Reddy --- Tom Murrin will comment on a few of Raj's extraordinary contributions and accomplishments; with emphasis on world-class manufacturing and enlightened management.

SPEAKER BIO:
Tom Murrin has been Dean of Duquesne University's School of Business Administration since early 1991. Previously he was Deputy Secretary of the U.S. Department of Commerce. Earlier, from 1983 to 1987, he was President of the Energy and Advanced Technology Group of Westinghouse Electric Corporation, which he joined in 1951. Mu. Murrin has served as Chairman of the Board of Overseers of the Commerce Department's Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award, the Federal Quality Institute, the Defense Department's Manufacturing Board, and the Commission on the Federal Appointment Process. We was a member of the President's Commission on Industrial Competitiveness and Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Aerospace Industires Association. He has served as Distinguished Service Professor in Technology and Management at Carnegie Mellon University, as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Duquesne University and as a member of Board of Trustees of Fordham University. Murrin is a Director of Motorola and the Duquesne Light Company and its holding Company, DQE, Inc., and several non-profit organizations. He is Chairman of Governor Ridge's Technology 21 Program; Chairman of the Pittsburgh Tissue Engineering Institute, and Chairman of the Assessment Panel of the Pittsburgh Public School System. He received his B.S. degree in Physics from Fordham University in 1951 (where he was a starting tackle under Coach Vice Lombardi!), and completed graduate work at several universities. He has received Honorary Degrees from Duquesne University and Fordham University -- and an Honorary Professor Award from Northern Jiaotong University in Beijing, China. He is a Fellow of the National Academy of Engineering and recently served on NAE's Study Committee on Foreign Participation in U.S. Research and Development. He is also a member of NAE's Program Advisory Committee and his views have been published in their prestigious ISSUES publication.
