Compressibility Box

The goal of this exhibit would be to compare the degrees of compressibility as well as to compare the changes in pressure and volume of various compressible fluids, specifically gases. The exhibit would illustrate the degrees of compressibility as well as the relationship between changes in pressure and volume by allowing the child to actually compress various gases ands see what occurs.

The gases would be colored and contained in clear boxes. When compressed, the shades of colors would become darker. If possible, one box will contain gas at a high enough pressure and temperature such that a slight, additional compression would cause the gas to undergo a phase change, and transform into liquid. Pressure gauges would also be used to illustrate the amount of pressure that changes with volume, for the various fluids.

This exhibit is interactive, as the participant causes the volume to change and feels the pressure change. The section of the compressibility box which is pushed by the participant is positioned horizontally, and the section containing the gas to be observed is raised, and positioned vertically in front of the participant, creating a highly visual effect.
