Telemanipulation aims at integrating the strengths of human and machine in such a way as to achieve a maximum extension of manipulation capability and efficacy, as an integrated unit, beyond the individual limits. With the advancement of manipulators in terms of their skills, mechanical dexterities, as well as intelligence, it becomes necessary to redefine the way how human and machine are integrated: a cooperative relationship between human and machine for sensing, perception, control, and planning may be more desirable. In this talk, research issues and results associated with teleoperation and telepresence under delay, skill transfer, as well as cooperative sensing and control for advanced telemanipulation will be presented. Followed is a short introduction of recent JPL telerobotics research effort for building autonomous robots for space exploration.
