Content-Based Image Retrieval: problems and current focus
HongJiang Zhang
Assistant Managing Director
Microsoft Research Asia
1305 Newell-Simon Hall
Refreshments 3:00 pm
Talk 3:15 pm
After 15 years of intensive research, it seems still far from seeing the light of solving the problem of content-based image retrieval (CBIR). This seminar will first briefly discuss problems with classical content-based image retrieval approaches. Then a survey on relevance feedback approaches will be given. This will lead to more focused presentation on a set of new learning-based relevance feedback algorithms and systems developed in the last 2 years. In addition, we present a new video content representation framework based on spatio-temporal entropy and energy and human perceptions, and its applications in video retrieval and content-aware video streaming. Demos of research prototypes will be given in this presentation.
Dr. HongJiang Zhang joined Microsoft Research Asia in 1999, where he is
a Senior Researcher and Assistant Managing Director. Dr. Zhang has been
actively engaged in research and development activities in the areas of
video and image analysis, processing and retrieval, computer vision and
their application in consumer and enterprise spaces. He is well known
in the multimedia research community for his pioneering work in video
and image content analysis, representation, retrieval and browsing.
Priori to Microsoft, Dr. Zhang was a research manager at HP Labs since
1995, and with the Institute of Systems Science, National University of
Singapore, where he led several projects in video and image content
analysis and retrieval and multimedia information systems.
Dr. Zhang has authored 3 books, close to 200 referred papers and book
chapters, over 30 US patents and pending applications, and numerous
special issues of professional journals in multimedia processing,
content-based retrieval, and Internet media. "Image and Video Processing
in Multimedia Systems", the book he co-authored and published by Kluwer
in 1995, was the first one addressed content-based image and video
retrieval research. Many of these research works have become classical
references in the respective research areas. He currently serves on the
editorial boards of five professional journals and a dozen committees of
international conferences. He was the Program Committee Co-chair of the
ACM Multimedia Conference, 1999.
