Abstract |
Carnegie Mellon has an active and
successful technology transfer practice. Each year CMU licenses many
technologies spins off several new companies. Rob Conway from CMU's Center for
Technology Transfer will explain the reasons and ways CMU transfers
technologies and helps commercialize research results. He will also discuss touch
on patents, types of licenses, and spin-off companies.

Experience
Rob has 20 years' experience in engineering, marketing and business management
in electric power generation, defense, telecommunications, business software
and consulting. Following military service as a nuclear submarine officer, he
joined Westinghouse, where he led engineering and marketing organizations.
Following
Westinghouse, Rob managed software product lines and led Asian business
development for Serviceware, including managing a
partnership with a major Japanese firm. Following Serviceware,
Rob led telecommunications software and cable television product lines for Tollgrade Communications.
In
1999 he founded a market research and sales consulting firm with clients in
high technology, business services, information technology, engineering, transportation,
education, environmental services, and manufacturing.
As a
Captain in the Naval Reserve, Rob has worked with US joint forces, and the
naval and air forces of NATO. He helped establish the Navy Warfare Development
Command, and served with the Department of the Navy eBusiness
Operations Office, Fleet Forces Command, the
Rob
is on the advisory boards of technology companies and is active in the Pittsburgh
Technology Council, Association for Corporate Growth, MIT Enterprise Forum, and
the Pittsburgh Venture Capital Association. He received two Engineering
Excellence awards from Westinghouse, and is a licensed Professional Engineer in
Carnegie Mellon Chronicle
Rob joined the Center for Technology Transfer in October 2003.

Rob's focus areas include: Carnegie Institute of Technology (Electrical & Computer,
Chemical, Mechanical and Civil Engineering) the Robotics Institute, National
Robotics Engineering Consortium (NREC) and the Entertainment Technology Center
(ETC).
