Directions

The Robotics Institute is housed within several buildings on Campus, but Smith Hall is the central location. See the Campus Map, where Smith Hall is designated as Building 19. Other buildings near and dear to VSAM are the PRB (number 22 on the map) and Wean Hall (number 2). Some on-campus parking is available at the parking garage, designated parking area 5 on the map.

From the Pittsburgh International Airport

Taxi is fastest, and most expensive ($40 one way). The trip takes roughly 30 minutes if there is no traffic.

New PAT bus to the airport, Route 28X . This is the cheapest alternative (at $1.95 it is an unbelievable deal!). The drawback is that you have to sit next to people who ride the bus. This service is called the 28X or the airport flyer. Service begins at CMU (Morewood and Forbes), with another pick up at Fifth and Bigelow Blvd., then a stop at 7th avenue downtown, then on to the airport. There is a small luggage rack for baggage and you will be responsible for your own baggage. It runs 7 days a week, roughly every 20 minutes (click on link above for schedule). The cost is $1.95 each way and if you want to go somewhere other than Oakland you can get a transfer for another $.25 and change buses downtown.

Driving from the Airport, follow the signs towards Pittsburgh - you will be on intersate 79. After you go through the Fort Pitt tunnel, get into the right hand lane as you cross the bridge, and take the sharp right exit ramp for Monroeville, which will put you on I-376 headed east. Take I-376 until the Forbes Avenue/Oakland exit. At the end of the exit ramp, you merge onto Forbes Avenue, which is a one-way street at that point. Continue on Forbes through the Oakland business district, and past the University of Pittsburgh's Cathedral of Learning tower, located at Bigelow Boulevard. Just beyond it is Bellefield Avenue where Forbes becomes a two-way street, stay in the right-hand lane following straight ahead on Forbes. Pass the Carnegie Museum (on your right) and the traffic light on Craig Street. Cross the bridge. Pass the next traffic light at Morewood. Turn right into the driveway entrance to the campus parking garage.

Driving from the Airport to the Holiday Inn. Follow the above driving directions until you get to Forbes and Bellefield, where Forbes becomes a two-way street. When you get to the traffic light at Forbes and Bellefield, turn left. At the next traffic light (Bellefield and 5th Ave), turn left. Go 2 blocks or so and turn right at the corner of 5th and Lytton. Go 1 block and you will see the Holiday Inn on your left.

From the Holiday Inn at University Center to Smith Hall

Walking: Proceed by taking a left down Fifth Avenue until you reach S. Craig Street. Take a right on Craig Street to where it meets Forbes Ave. and turn left. Walk approximately 250 meters and turn right into the Hamburg Hall parking lot immediately after you cross the concrete bridge. Walk along the sidewalk adjacent to the building, walk behind the building and you will see Smith Hall on your left.

Driving: Just follow Fifth Avenue to the right (since it is a one way street) and make the first left onto Bigelow Blvd. One block, at the next traffic light one block, you'll turn left onto Forbes Ave. Turn left and follow Forbes for .5km, past the Museum complex and cross a small concrete bridge. Make an immediate right into the Hamburg Hall parking lot after the bridge. Once you've made that right turn into CMU, take the next left to bring you behind the main building. There is a stop sign there. Go straight about 10 meters and Smith Hall will be located to your immediate left.
