Goose Bay, Canada 2005/8/6

2005/8/6 On a flight from Chicago to Germany, I observed aurora through the window from 2:30 UT for about an hour. The crew informed me that we were over Goose Bay, Canada. With a blanket over head, I took several photos with a Nikon Coolpix 995 camera. All photos are 8-second exposure, widest zoom, full aperture and ISO 800 with noise reduction on.

The aurora was mostly greenish gray to the naked eye. Occasionally there were brighter curtains and rays. I pointed the aurora out to several passengers and crew members. The aurora was lower than the big dipper, extending from left to right as far as I could see. The shape changed rapidly, often within the 8-second exposure time. In addition there was very rapid pulsation, maybe as fast as 3--5 Hz. Horizontal aurora bands would move rapidly upwards, producing the illusion that we were flying through pockets of fog.
