15-213 Intro to Computer Systems: Frequently Asked Questions (513 Edition)

    General Course Issues

  • Why am I on the waitlist? I have to take this course!

    • Waitlists are processed by Nicole Stenger.
    • The instructional staff coordinates these decisions, but cannot add you directly.

  • Where are the videos?

    • A link to each video will be added to the schedule page after that lecture.

  • Why is 15-513 both 6 and 12 units?

    • 15-513 ensures that graduate students are current with their knowledge of C and computing systems.
    • Depending on a student's background this material may be entirely new, entirely review, or somewhere in between.
    • If this material is generally review, then the course will require roughly 6 units of work.
    • If this material is mostly new to you, then completing the course will require closer to 12 units of work.

  • If I sign up for 12 units will that require more work than 6 units?

    • No, whether you sign up for 6 or 12 units, you will have to fulfil exactly the same requirements.
    • If you try to sign up for 12 and are taking 6, email Nicole (see waitlist question)

  • But what is a unit?

    • A unit corresponds to approximately 1 hour of work per week for a course.

  • When are classes? The schedule is listed as TBA.

    • While 15-513 parallels 15-213, it does not have a lecture component.
    • So the material is released at the same pace, but you are welcome to study it at your leisure as 15-513 does not have a meeting time.

  • When are exams?

    • The 15-513 midterm will be provided through an online exam server that will be available for 24 hours on or about June 24th.
    • The final exam will be offered both in Pittsburgh on the official exam day for summer semester, August 5th. And again during orientation week.
    • You

      MUST

take the final exam in person at Carnegie Mellon's main campus, except...

  • I thought I could take the exam on my local campus?

    • Yes, arrangements have been made for students in Qatar and Silicon Valley to take the exams at those locations.

  • Why can I not access autolab?

    • Autolab access is granted following the start of the semester.
    • If you added the course after that date, please fill out this form and you will be added within 24 hours.
