Homework Assignment #2 Digitizing Images

You will be responsible for digitizing at least ten photographs or images via a scanner. You should then store these images in at least two resolutions. These images may become part of the interactive animation you will create as the next homework assignment. If you need a photograph set, you may contact Mike Christel at christel@cs.cmu.edu. This assignment is due with Homework #3 (but since Homework #3 will take at least a day, you probably should finish this by Oct. 29). Examples of such images can be seen at http://billswin.inf.cs.cmu.edu/Italy/RomeSet.html (more will be shown in class Oct. 25).

Homework Assignment #3 Animation and Interactivity

You will be using a trial version of Macromedia Flash version 4.0 to author your animation. This assignment is due Nov. 15.

You can download Flash 4.0 trial version for your computer by following the instructions at http://www.macromedia.com/software/flash/trial/. Only brief instruction and an overview will be provided in class. Additional lessons are provided within the trial version of Flash itself. Also, the following URLs to WebMonkey tutorials on using Flash 4.0 for web-based animations are recommended:

http://www.hotwired.com/webmonkey/multimedia/shockwave_flash/tutorials/tutorial6.html

http://www.hotwired.com/webmonkey/multimedia/shockwave_flash/tutorials/tutorial7.html

You must have at least three different types of animation effects within your final production, such as shape/rotation tweening, motion tweening, or tweening along a specified path. You must have an interactive movie that contains at least one play point and one stop point. You must also include at least one example of a button with different states. (The Flash tutorial and lessons will clarify these terms and their implementation.) Extra credit will be given if you include sound as part of your Flash movie. An example of a Flash movie that meets the minimum criteria (but has other problems which will be discussed in class Oct. 25) is at http://billswin.inf.cs.cmu.edu/Italy/ItalyTour.html.

You should email a URL to christel@cs.cmu.edu, which contains your Flash movie. This movie should be viewable using either Internet Explorer or Netscape. If you need help, feel free to contact the instructors (or the TA).

Enjoy your creative freedom with this animation tool for web publishing. For all you budding artists and animation superstars, this is the assignment that gives you a chance to show off your skills.
