About Me

I am a PhD Candidate at the Language Technologies Institute in the School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University, and a Science and Technology Policy Fellow at the Federation of American Scientists. At CMU, I am part of the Approximately Correct Machine Intelligence (ACMI) Lab, and am advised by Dr. Eduard Hovy and Dr. Zachary Lipton. I am an Amazon Graduate Research Fellow and broadly, my interests lie in exploring human-AI interaction. My research specifically focuses on exploring how we can use different forms of human feedback to robustify NLP systems. Over the years, my work has been supported by Amazon AI, Pricewaterhouse Coopers, and Facebook AI. I am also the President of CMU's Graduate Student Assembly and when I'm not doing research, I can be found writing on several policy issues (recently appearing in Forbes, Institute for Progress, Issues in Science and Technology and PublicSource) or in the halls of Capitol Hill advocating for science policy or grabbing a snack from the Dirksen Cafeteria.

27 Jan 2022 - Joined the Federation of American Scientists - I have joined FAS as a Science and Technology Fellow and will continue to write on policy issues as they relate to emerging technologies (especially AI), as well as on science and immigration issues more broadly.

24 May 2021 - Interning at Amazon AWS, Santa Clara - I am interning this summer with Krishnaram Kenthapadi, Bilal Zafar and Matt Lease on exploring the reliability of evidence extraction methods under plausible distribution shifts. Update (26 Aug 2021) --- I finished my internship and will be staying on at AWS as a Visiting Researcher for another semester.

18 May 2020 - Interning at Facebook AI Research, Seattle - I am interning this summer with Scott Yih and Douwe Kiela on robustifying QA models with human adversaries. Update (28 Aug 2020) --- I finished my internship and will be staying on at FAIR as a Part Time Student Researcher for another semester.

14 Aug 2020 - We will be organizing HAMLETS at NeurIPS 2020 - Our workshop on Human and Model In The Loop Enabled Evaluation and Training Strategies (HAMLETS) was accepted at NeurIPS 2020. We will be organizing the workshop on December 12th. Please consider submitting! Check out the CFP here.

07 Aug 2019 - Received Facebook Robust Deep Learning for NLP Research Award - Our proposal on "Robustifying NLP by exploiting invariances learned via human interaction" was one of eleven proposals (out of 115 proposals submitted) to receive funding from Facebook AI.

04 May 2019 - Serving as the Vice President of External Affairs for CMU Graduate Student Assembly - I will be leading CMU GSA's advocacy on Capitol Hill. Update (04 May 2020) --- I was re-elected to the position in 2020. Some of my work was featured in Mother Jones, The Tartan, Politico. The Chronicle of Higher Education, Pittsburgh Tribune Review, The Tech, Public Source, and PBS.

19 Sept 2018 - Our EMNLP paper was selected as the Best Short Paper - You can read the paper here. The conference saw a total of 855 paper submissions to the short paper category.
