Peter Niewiarowski’s (biologist) life long
research is salamander population changes and migrations.
Menbranes 1.5: Windhover interprets this migration information,
genetically determined, among 17 ponds around Akron and Cleveland.
It is represented as an interactive space reacting to the
participants' motions and shapes. When participants enter the
space, they are submerged into this imaginary water-filled space
and visualization of biological data from these ponds in Ohio. The
'membranes' are like different permeability of the landscapes that
the salamanders have to traverse when they move among ponds, for
some membranes are more permeable than others. The spinning
objects suggest centripetal and centrifugal forces deflecting and
attracting migrant salamanders. The participant’s presence
distorts the visualization as a metaphor of human interaction with
nature in the world.
