.Mac members:

Check out the new look and the tutorials - OS X - Tiger, iLife '06 with iWeb, blogging, podcasting and much more.

iDisk works with Windows XP (so we can share files easily with family members who are on the "Dark Side"
;-).

Make use of iCal!

I've posted the CMU Academic Calendar at: www.icalshare.com. There are lots of other useful calendars out there to link to as well.

You can view the academic calendar or subscribe to it by right or control clicking on this link, copying the link location and pasting it into iCal by opening "Calendar" > Subscribe...

I'm also maintaining an SCS-CS iCal calendar for those who are interested. It can be viewed at CMU_SCS-CS or you can use the same instructions above to use this link to subscribe.

Software Recommendations

Software (Freeware, Shareware, Updates, etc.):

Freeware/Donationware:

Dashboard Widgets - The new Dashboard hosts nifty mini-applications called widgets that appear instantly and keep you up to date with timely information from the Internet. View stocks, check weather forecasts, track flights, convert currency and units of measure, even look up businesses in the phone book.

Cocktail - 10.2 or later. Simplifies use of advanced UNIX functions and gives access to hidden Mac OS X files/settings.

Carbon Copy Cloner - Have you ever wanted a simple, complete, bootable backup of your hard drive?  Have you ever wanted to upgrade to a larger hard drive with minimal hassle and without reinstalling your OS and all of your applications?  Have you ever wanted to move your entire Mac OS X installation to a new computer?  Then CCC is the tool for you! *Note: CCC is not entirely compatible with Tiger - an alternative, suggested by some Apple folk is to now use the built-in capabilities in Disk Utility. Another Bombich software that might be of use is NetRestore.

Shareware:

iPod
Zapptek.com - iSpeak It: Listen to your documents on your iPod. Take any document or web feed and convert it into an MP3/AAC track in iTunes using your Mac's built-in text-to-speech capabilities. Automatically download podcasts and copy them into iTunes. From there it's a quick sync to your iPod and away you go!
and
iPresent It: Who needs a laptop to give a presentation? Make your next pitch using your iPod photo. With iPresent It you can convert your PowerPoint, PDF and Keynote presentations into slideshows that are synced with your iPod photo. Never carry a laptop into a presentation again; it's all on your iPod!

Utilities
SideTrack - From Raging Menace, SideTrack is a replacement driver for most Apple PowerBook and iBook trackpads. With SideTrack installed, your standard trackpad becomes a powerful multi-button scrolling mouse.
*Note: Apple's new PowerBooks include a scrolling USB trackpad. For information on how this affects SideTrack see the News page.

Porchdog Software - Spike - No matter what business you’re in, sharing text, images, and files over a network is part of your workflow. Spike, the network clipboard, makes sharing not only secure, but as simple as cutting and pasting.

Commercial:

BBedit

iWork (incl. Pages & Keynote; Avail. CMU Comp. Store)

Diskwarrior

FileMaker Pro (Avail. CMU Comp. Store)

Also available at the CMU Computer Store are reduced cost licenses for MS Office, Virtual PC 7, Windows XP (to run in Virtual PC) not to mention the Adobe Suites. Check with CS Facilities for things like Office 2004 for your office machines. The department has a site license. Another good place to look for site licensed apps is at MyAndrew. You will need your Andrew Login ID and password to access this.
