Getting Here
The nearest airport is the Geneva airport (GVA) which is about 35 minutes from the EPFL campus by train/metro. There are several daily non-stop flights from cities in the US and across Europe to GVA.The Zurich airport (ZRH) is farther away, but serves more destinations than GVA. For some, it may be more convenient to fly into ZRH and to take the train/metro to the EPFL campus (about 2hrs)Regardless of which airport you arrive at, there are two common ways to get to EPFL from the train station.
Take the train to the "Renens" train station (small town next to Lausanne) and take the m1 metro to the EPFL station.
Take the train to the "Lausanne" train station and take the m2 metro to the Lausanne-Flon station (1 stop) where you will switch to the m1 metro and take it to the EPFL station.
For both transit within the Lausanne region, and beyond (e.g., from GVA or ZRH to Lausanne) there are convenient mobile apps in English that allow you to quickly purchase train and metro tickets on the fly. Those apps are:
Where to stay
There are several options for hotels and AirBnbs throughout the region. There are two general options for lodging– staying near the EPFL campus (quieter, away from the center of Lausanne), or within the Lausanne city center. For those folks who would like to sightsee or enjoy local cuisine or wine, staying in the Lausanne city center is a better choice. For those who would like to arrive for a short stay only to attend OderskyFest and aren't interested in sightseeing/restaurants/etc, staying at a hotel near campus is a better choice.Hotels near EPFL
SwissTech Hotel - at the EPFL metro station, more barebones.
Starling Hotel Lausanne - situated north of the EPFL campus across Route Cantonale. Nicer quality (and a bit more expensive) than SwissTech, slightly shorter walk to the EPFL building where the festivities will be.
Lodging options in the Lausanne city centerThere are several hotels near Lausanne-Flon and near the Lausanne train station. Booking.com list all of them.If you're interested in renting a room or entire apartment on AirBnb, the areas of the city that you may be most interested in staying in include: Lausanne Flon (Center), Lausanne Riponne (Center), Ouchy (lakeside), Renens (small town, not Lausanne but closer to EPFL than the Lausanne city center)
