Advanced Programming/Practicum

Office Hours		 My office is Wean 5122. Notice that I am in class/staff-meetings most mornings, so I will not be in my office during those hours. Sometime I have special meetings to attend during the week, which I will announce in class and/or via e-mail.

Generally I hold about four office hours in the afternoons, Monday through Friday (except Thursday, when I work at home).

Instructor
Online Hours		 I am going to hold online hours every Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday (the critical days to work on programming assignments) from 8:30pm-9:30pm. I will log on AIM (AOL Instant Messenger) as richardepattis during these times.

If you are not already a member of AIM Sign Up for this service (it is free). Using this system, you will be able to Instant Message me, as well as use an audio (voice) connection if you have a headset with a microphone. Please be aware when you connect that I may be having multiple conversations, and therefore react more slowly than you might expect.

CA
Help Session Hours		 Course Assistants (my sections only) will run help/review sessions almost every evening (SuMTuWTh) in Wean 5312 from 6:30pm-7:30pm. These sessions are designed to review and clarify lecture material, help students solve the problems assigned in lecture, or help students (conceptually) with their programming assignments -away from any computers.

On Mondays of weeks when quizzes are due, the CA will also review answers to the quiz due that day. On Thursdays of weeks when programs are due, the CA will also review solutions to the programming assignment that was due the day before. Finally, some of these meetings will be extended and act as review sessions before tests.

These sessions are not lectures (and attending them is not a replacement for attending lectures). You must come prepared to ask questions based on what you understand from lecture, and what is still confusing; the CAs will answer your questions, filling in bits a pieces from the lecture as appropriate.

CA
Consulting Hours		 Course Assistants (from my sections of 15-200) will be available at special hours to help you debug your programs: in Wean 5419 AB (you must be able to download your files from the Andrew file system to get help in Wean).

These interactions are designed to get you over any small Java problems that you encounter while writing, editing, compiling, running, testing, and debugging your programs. The interactions are one-to-one and should be short (5-10 minutes). Be prepared to explain what you have done up to the point when you encountered the problem, and be prepared to answer relevant questions about your program that the CA may pose. The expectation is that you and the CA will cooperatively correct the problem, and that you will learn something in the process, to make future interactions less likely (do not expect the CA just to fix the problem for you).

Remember, all these interactions are designed to help you overcome small programming problems. They are not designed for the CA to write/debug large parts of your program. As the semester progresses, and your programming skill grows, you should be relying on this kind of help less frequently (and when you need it, you should be able to aks very directed questions). If you are having programming problems on a large scale, you should see your instructor, or attend CA Help Session hours.
