The Rubber Band Gun

How does it work?

This toy uses the physical principal of the spring-like nature of rubber bands. When the trigger is pulled back, the wheel (which is being pulled down the barrel by the rubber band) is released and allowed to advance by a mechanism in the gun. This releases the rubber band, which then is propelled towards the target.

How can you play with it?

The gun can be used by a single child by simply shooting rubber bands at targets (such as soda cans or siblings) or can be used by multiple children who are shooting at eachother. If playing a multiple child game, each child should understand not to, and avoid, shooting at another child's eye or face.

What is it made of? Will it break while I am playing with it?

The gun can be made of wood with plastic or entirely out of plastic. It does not contain fragile or many parts and should therefore be quite durable even if it is played with many times. Its simplicity and cheap materials should make it inexpensive and easy to make. Because it is relatively simple with few parts it should be fairly self-explanitory how to play with.

Is it safe? How old do I have to be before I can play with it safely?

The gun does pose a bit of a safety hazard if the children playing with it accidentally shoot someone in the eye. In light of this, children under the age of understanding not to aim things at faces should not be allowed to play with the gun.

Why would I want to play with this?

Lots of little kids like to play with toy guns. There is something facinating about projecting an object far away from yourself at great speed to hit a distant target.
