Many drawbridges rely on principles of balance to ease the process of raising and lowering the road. In the picture above, a large concrete counterweight helps balance the weight of the road. During construction of a cable stay bridge, the towers are built individually, and the road deck is built out from them. They must be careful not to build one side faster than the other, or the bridge could become imbalanced, and fall over. The picture above shows a cable stay bridge being built across the Mississippi river. Above is a picture of a complete cable stay bridge. Cranes use a large counterweight to maintain balance when they lift a heavy load. In the picture above the large weight on the right prevents the crane from toppling over. The Hummer has a very low center of gravity, which allows it to stay balanced even when climbing a very steep slope. |
