15-213 Introduction to Computer Systems (ICS): Exams

  • 15-213 exams are taken online with an automated exam system that provides students with more flexibility, more time, and instant feedback at the completion of the exam. Exams still proctored, unless you are a distance student taking the midterm.
  • Although the exam delivery is now electronic, rather than on paper, the questions formats remain the same as were in use previously. Students may print exam questions if they wish.
  • Just before an exam period starts, you will receive a detailed email from the instructor, containing a password that will allow you to access the exam.
  • All exams are closed book. You are allowed one double-sided, 8.5x11 cheat sheet for the midterm, and two such cheat sheets for the final. They must be your own work (i.e., you may not print a cheat sheet you find online, or photocopy a friend's) and they may not contain any preworked exam problems.
  • You may not bring any reference materials. You are not permitted to use a calculator or any other electronic aid.

  • The midterm exam takes place Monday, June 30 - Wednesday July 2.
  • It covers chapters 1-3 and 6, and all lectures up to and including caching.
  • Students in Pittsburgh can take the exam in Gates-Hillman 3000 on Monday or Wednesday from 10 a.m. - 10 p.m., or Tuesday 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. Please bring your exam password and your student ID.
  • Distance students can self-proctor their exam any time between 10 a.m. Monday and 10 p.m. Wednesday, Eastern Daylight Time. The exam's URL will be in the email you receive shortly before the exam period begins.
  • NEW: MIDTERM FAQ:
    • Do I need to sign up for an exam slot? No, just show up.
    • Will there still be class on Tuesday and Wednesday? Yes!
    • Will there be office hours during exam days? No, but you can always come find a TA in the exam room if you're desperate for a TA.
    • Will there be recitation on Thursday? No; happy 4th of July!
