Commercial Potential:
The commercial impact on the development and usage policy of vaccines and antiviral and antibacterial drugs. These sequence-based algorithms could be used, among other things, to:
- Predict drug resistance to decide drug of choice (Adamantanes? Oseltamivir? neither?)
- Predict vaccine efficacy for any given formulation (e.g. Influenza annual formulations)
- Personalize vaccines and/or drugs treatments based on HLA typing and demographic information
- Identify particular targets for drug and vaccine development which will be less prone to mutational escape
- Perform large scale drug screening

- Bio-defense: speed up assessment and decision making
- Public health: Assessing all past vaccines against an emerging strain
- Identifying disease determinants from LD analysis (using HAPMAP)
