Academics tend to (want to) do many disparate things, despite the "publish or perish" myth, and I've spent a fair amount of time working with students on projects, outreach activities, etc.  I have especially spent time on issues relating to technology and developing regions.

The Center for Appalachian Network Access (CANA), founded by John Whitehill and Bruce Maggs, does amazing things for underserved regions here within the US. Spending a little time in rural Pennsylvania mentoring students and working with the local community highlighted for me that the digital divide is global, and a moving target.

I served as Vice-Chair of the UN ICT Task Force Working Group on Enabling Environment (formerly, Low-Cost Connectivity Access).  This Task Force was recently superceded by the Global Alliance on ICT and Development (GAID).

I am on the Technology Advisory Board for Southern California Edison's Advanced Metering Infrastructure poject.  This "smart metering" project is leading the redesign of open-standard based innovating metering and control.

I serve or have served on the program committee for a number of conferences or workshops, including the Intl. Conferences on ICT and Development (ICTD), the Telecommunications Policy Research Conference (TPRC), IFIP WG9.4 (Social Implications of Computers in Developing Countries), SIGCOMM Network Systems for Developing Regions Workshop, and IJCAI AI in ICT for Development Workshop.  (A number of these are over multiple years.)  I am Program Co-chair of ICTD2009, to be held April 2009.

I am an Associate Editor at the journal Information Technology and International Development, and on the editorial board of I/S: A Journal of Law and Policy for the Information Society.  I was a member of the organizing and editorial committee {~co-editor} for Materials Research Society Bulletin's special issue on Harnessing Materials for Energy.  I am on the Commonwealth Telecommunications Organization's Editorial Board for the Commonwealth African Rural Connectivity Initiative (COMARCI) Report .  I have also been a reviewer for a over a dozen journals and conferences, excluding reviews part of being an editorial board or program committee member.

I am a member of Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and their Society on Social Implications of Technology (SSIT), Power and Energy Society (PES), and the Communications Society (ComSoc).

I am a member of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and their Special Interest Group on Computers and Society (SIGCAS).

I am also an active participant/member in a number of discussion lists, including Dave Farber's exceptional Interesting People [IP] list, the community at InfoDev, the Association of African Internet Service Provider Associations (AfrISPA), and a few private groups covering ICTD and also the future of the Net.
