U-construct annotations
- CP-projection
- This annotation identifies a u-constructor that will create a CP node with an
empty head. These empty CP's are projected from IP's in the absence of an
overt complementizer. For example, in "John thinks the dog is big", the IP
headed by "is" will project to a CP, even though there is no overt
complementizer "that". Of course, in cases where there is an overt
complementizer, the operator that creates the CP headed by the complementizer
is preferred to the operator that creates the empty CP.
- Duplicate-relation
- This annotation identifies a u-constructor that will create a structural link
that duplicates one that already exists in the model. These operators are
created because the generator and constraint checks do not explicitly check to
see if the position(s) to be filled by the operator is in fact empty. Once
established, a duplicate relation will immediately trigger a
snip to repair the structure. Thus, a u-constructor that is annotated
duplicate-relation will generally also include a snip operation.
- Adjunction
- This annotation identifies a u-constructor that will do a Chomskian-style adjoin
from one structure to another, as opposed to placing them in the relation of
complement or specifier.
