What Is AI4ALL?
There is a diversity crisis in AI and computer science: a homogenous group of technologists are building AI solutions for a diverse population. The global economic impact of AI is expected to reach $15.7 trillion by 2030, but less than 14% of AI researchers globally are women, and black and Hispanic men and women make up less than 11% of people employed in U.S. STEM jobs. This lack of diversity results in biased AI products that, at best, don’t serve everyone. At worst, they actively harm underrepresented groups. It's crucial to take action to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to guide the creation of AI as a tool for good.
AI4ALL is a U.S.-based nonprofit dedicated to increasing diversity and inclusion in AI education, research, development and policy. One way they accomplish that is by offering summer programs at 11 universities across the nation, including Carnegie Mellon. Through the CMU AI4ALL summer program, rising juniors and seniors with a strong interest in computer science can study artificial intelligence with CMU faculty, staff and researchers who are leaders in the field. The program is free, and students reside on campus, where they are immersed in hands-on learning, and develop a supportive peer network that will help them throughout their AI careers.
Who Should Apply?
We're looking for high school students at least 16 years old by the program date who self-identify as part of an underrepresented group in AI, including but not limited to:
- Underrepresented in computer science, defined as being African American, Hispanic/Latino/LatinX, Native American, and/or female.
- Underserved, defined as coming from low socioeconomic means, which may be indicated by qualification for free/reduced lunch.
- Potentially the first family member to attend college.
- Coming from a high school with low admittance rates to top-tier colleges.
- Residing in geographically diverse areas, especially rural and inner city communities.
No coding experience is necessary.
How Do I Apply?
All applicants must submit three essays as part of their application, covering why they're interested in participating in CMU's AI4ALL program, obstacles they may have overcome to pursue their love of science and technology, and what diversity and inclusion mean to them. A transcript is also required. Once you have all that ready, you can fill out the application. The application deadline is Sunday, March 15.
