Tiramisu Transit, an iPhone app developed by Carnegie Mellon that uses crowdsourcing to help transit riders know when their bus will arrive, won second place in the Best New Innovative Products, Services, or Applications category of the 2011 Best of ITS Awards
The awards are sponsored by the Intelligent Transportation Society of America. They were announced at the 18th World Congress on Intelligent Transport Systems & Annual Meeting in Orlando, FL.
"This is the leading awards program in the country on transportation innovation and each of the winners is truly propelling transportation innovation forward," said Scott Belcher, President and CEO of ITS America. "Each project that was recognized is a great example of how technology can be used to cost-effectively create a safer, more effective transportation network."
Tiramisu was developed by researchers in the Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center on Accessible Public Transportation (RERC-APT), supported in part by CMU's Traffic21 initiative. The Tiramisu development team is led by Aaron Steinfeld, a senior systems scientist in the Robotics Institute and co-director of RERC-APT; Anthony Tomasic, senior systems scientist in the Institute for Software Research, and John Zimmerman, associate professor in the Human-Computer Interaction Institute and the School of Design.
