Lecture 21: Inverse Focusing

Even with the restriction to subformulas of the goal sequent, in general too many intermediate sequents will be generated from the initial sequents. To further reduce this conjunctive non-determinism we transfer the insights used to design the focusing rule to the inverse method, cutting down on the number of possible derivations which will be considered. Tammet called these improvements the inversion strategy and the reduction strategy. We provide a more abstract foundation for these optimizations.
