I downloaded windows media player 7.1 as suggested,
changed to 22.05 khz 16 bit mono with the same "Failed to open acmStream"
result.
I can record and playback, but get the aforementioned
prompt when I touch the OK.
I have tried this in 1-18-4 and 1-17-5 with the same
result.
I do have Realplayer installed. Would that conflict
with media player? I am using windows 2000.

opened?
Install windows
media player 7.x and see if that helps. Looks like beta 8 is out
too, though we haven't tried it.
Note that by
clicking ok with the screen as you have it, you will be saving the file in
mp3 format which is not yet supported by 4.x ballot station (3.x
works). Click format first and change to PCM 22khz mono before
clicking OK. That may well work around your original problem as
well.

After recording and clicking the OK the GEMS
Exception prompt "failed to open acmStream" appears. What is
the acmStream and how is it opened? Using GEMS-1-18-4 and
TSText-1-18-5.
