How To Apply
Please read the following instructions carefully and make certain that you have met all requirements before you submit your application.
1.  Complete the application form a downloadable Microsoft Word form. Use Word to fill it out and email it to us.
2. Request three letters of recommendation. Recommendations can be from instructors or professional supervisors. People who recommend you should know you relatively well and be able to discuss the quality of your work. Downloadable Recommendation Forms can be emailed to those writing on your behalf, or can be printed and sent by regular mail to them. They should then submit their recommendations directly to us.
3. Please request official transcripts from your undergraduate and previous graduate programs (if applicable) and have them sent directly to:

4. The Admissions Committee will screen the applications and will select candidates for interviews. The purpose of the interview is to learn more about the whole person so we can make a more informed decision. (Interviews can be in person or on the phone.)
5. Candidates selected for admission will be notified of their acceptance, conditional on verification of information provided in the application.
6. Non-native speakers of English (international applicants who do not have a degree from a US school) should take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) examination. Report your scores informally on your application, and have the official scores sent directly to the School of Computer Science, Carnegie Mellon University as follows:

8. A non-refundable application fee of $65.00 must accompany the application form. Please submit your payment either by credit card (all major credit cards except American Express), a check drawn on a U.S. bank, or a money order made payable to Carnegie Mellon University. DO NOT SEND CASH OR STAMPS. Your application will not be processed until we receive your application AND application fee.
9. All students who are not US citizens or permanent residents who have been accepted should review this checklist to ensure that you will be able to attend Carnegie Mellon and that you will be able to arrive on time. If you are an international student or scholar please follow the same application process as stated above. You should also visit the Office of International Education's home page.
