I am currently in
the Computer Science PhD program at Carnegie Mellon University. My research interests lie
in the areas of "information visualization" and user interfaces. Information
visualization refers to the design of visual elements for representing abstract
information such as financial data (e.g. stock prices, p/e ratio), project management data
(e.g. activity start-time, cost), or real-estate data (e.g. house-price, date-sold,
number-of-rooms). Quite a few terms in there, but it basically means designing graphics
such as bar-charts, tables, maps, etc for representing your everyday data. If you have
ever used a spreadsheet program like Lotus-123 or Microsoft Excel, or if you have ever
drawn a chart in Microsoft PowerPoint, you are already an "information visualization
designer" !!
The main goal of
researchers in this field is to make it easier for you and me to keep track of information
on the net, navigate through our many files, and even analyze and compare our game
statistics with our friends. If we were worried about mundane pursuits like making a
living and investing our money, we could also use visualizations to keep track of our
financial investments and get quick summaries of stock performance.
There are many
different types of research that go on in the area of information visualization:
